mtn space gallery is pleased to present Stones and Waterfalls, a solo exhibition of works on paper by New York-based artist Joey Parlett.
As a recent transplant from New York City to a tiny rural community in the Catskills, Parlett’s new home is nestled within one of the state’s major watersheds and is now surrounded by trickling brooks that eventually feed into New York’s largest reservoir. While much of Parlett’s work explores a distant ideal — almost fantastical — this newest body of drawings comes from observing his immediate environment while reflecting on the cultural myths we attach to landscape pictures.
A deep-seated curiosity about the processes and vast scales of the natural world anchors Parlett’s interest in geology. Using ink and pen to weave together images from geology textbooks, American West survey photographs, graphic design, and his own photographs, the landscape work is a way to formalize his thoughts and feelings about mental shifts and transformations.
Joey Parlett is an artist who works on paper. In 2021, he was featured in the NY PBS documentary series, “Flowstate / North Brooklyn Artists.” In 2015, he was selected to participate in the Arctic Circle Residency along with a group of international artists and writers. He has exhibited at numerous galleries, including the former Pace Wildenstein Gallery, My Pet Ram, TSA, Underdonk, and Transmitter Gallery in New York, NY.
