mtn space gallery is pleased to present Civitas, a solo exhibition of work by multi-media artist Hermes Berrio.
From standing in the alcohol aisle at Publix while recovering from addiction, to the steadiness of the neighborhood ice cream truck, Berrio’s practice casts all of South Florida — Miami specifically — under the unflinching gaze of a local.
Emphasizing both the mundane and extraordinary, Berrio’s work is both deeply personal and documentary in nature, stemming from photography and conceptual surveys of his surroundings. By employing a large scale, Berrio also represents a commanding, monumental, and unpretentious vision of urban life — one that captures what it means to be a part of this rapidly-changing community.
Hermes Berrio (b. 1980, Colombia) currently lives and works in Miami. He received his BFA from New York University in 2005. In recent years, he has exhibited his work internationally and completed many mural projects in the city of Miami. He has been awarded the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, The Ruth and Harold Chenven Foundation Grant, and the Miami Individual Artist Grant. He was also a resident of Fountainhead Studios from 2019-24. His work has been featured in Hyperallergic, Hi-Fructose, and Medium, among others.
Civitas will be on view through February 15, 2025. An opening reception will be held on January 18th from 6-8pm. This is Berrio's first solo exhibition with mtn space gallery.
