Press Release

Mtn space gallery is pleased to present Steven Cabral: Ineffable Patterns, opening on March 17, 2023.

Ineffable Patterns celebrates the eponymous new painting series by Boston-based artist Steven Cabral. Through the series, Cabral explored patterns that cannot be described or expressed, thereby encouraging his viewers to consider the limitations of language — both verbal and nonverbal  — and question how we try to understand our exterior and interior worlds.

Created between 2020-3 after Cabral suffered a personal loss, the series allowed the artist to process his grief while attempting to create and access a world that had become inaccessible. The patterns, hues, and spaces are responses to triggers within memories and an attempt toward a more resolved understanding of his past. Ineffable Patterns points to the impossibility of this task:  the ultimate inability to access the space behind the surface, the fickle nature of memory, and the hard lessons learned about the fleeting timeline of existence.

Steven Cabral is a Boston-based painter, whose work has been shown throughout the Northeast. Cabral holds a BFA in painting from Massachusetts College of Art and Design and an MFA from Lesley University College of Art and Design. He currently lives and works in Somerville, MA.
